Heart for Adelaide Presented to Cycling Without Age
On Monday 14th September the Life FM Roadies had the pleasure of presenting the Heart for Adelaide Award to Cycling Without Age.
This program originated in Copenhagen in 2012, that takes the elderly and people with reduced mobility for rides on adaptive bicycles called trishaws. In Adelaide, volunteers provide free trishaw rides along the River Torrens giving passengers the opportunity to experience the outdoors and reigniting a sense of freedom and adventure.
Around 70 amazing volunteers make up the Cycling Without Age Adelaide Chapter, taking on vital roles such as Pilots (riders), Scouts (guiding and watching for pedestrians), Mechanics, Administrators and Trainers.
Peter Shortman, a Pilot and committee member, shared how he often feels like a tour guide pointing out sites along the way such as Memorial Drive Tennis Courts and the Adelaide Zoo. Many of the elderly chat to their Pilot and reminisce. After the ride often passengers can’t stop talking about their experience.
Peter said “The bumps are free, we don’t charge for them, as well as the rides of course!”
Rides are currently available weekday mornings from 10am from the meeting point at Bonython Park. The team can be contacted via their website cyclingwithoutage.org.au or at their Facebook page Cycling without Age – Adelaide. Click on the links below to hear the full interview:
